plot
Forty years ago, the Eighth Pass began. Things took an unexpected turn; thread no longer burned skin and stone, but mutated humans and dragons alike. Strange creatures took up residence in Pern, some hostile, some kind. Creatures that possessed such strange, consuming power they could only be called one thing; gods. Now, Midnight Weyr has only one goal in mind; survive.

The Eighth Pass began much like any other pass. The Red Star began to move across the sky, thread began to fall, and dragonriders were called to do their duty once again. Two turns into that, everything changed. The Red Star stopped its slow movement across the sky, and began to visibly spin in place. Thread stopped falling for two years. This event has been named the Awakening, and it was when everything began to change. When thread fell again two years after, things were different. The thread didn't sear the ground it touched, or riders flesh. Instead, it shriveled and left behind a sticky substance that a good wash seemed to get rid of. The change was bizarre, but for the first year, this change was more than welcome. Perhaps thread had finally lost its oomph.

Then the first mutations began to appear. Those riders who thread had touched began to experience strange physical changes- anything from different eyes to new limbs were reported, and Pern panicked. It wasn't until the first amalgamates, monsters created when a group of thread landed near one another, thread was blamed. When children with oddly colored eyes and hair were born, it was the least of Pern's problems. That was, until those children started displaying strange powers. For years, people struggled to survive, ostracizing the odd children and those mutated.

When a massive fish appeared, transparent and baring organs no one was able to describe, things got worse. Creatures around Pern began to change and plants began to get strange. Holds began to fall. Those without a weyr nearby or plenty of whers were doomed to fall, either to the new creatures or the amalgamates.

Igen Weyr was the first to fall, the refugees scattering to the remaining weyrs. Immediately after, two new colors of dragon hatch. Dubbed dawn and dusk, some whispers herald them as signs that the world itself was ending. However, with every dragon needed, none were cast out from the weyrs. Five years later, all communication from Telgar Weyr was lost. But in 2032, after the great fish was spotted again, something else came.

Fort Hold is destroyed utterly by another strange, massive creature. The victims die by having all of their body heat absorbed. The creature turns its sights on Fort Weyr as well, but the dragons manage to beat it back- barely. With refugees, human and wher coming to Fort, it's clear that the world has changed forever. This is not temporary. They must adjust. A long forgotten word is whispered- maybe they've caught the attention of something more. Maybe they've got the attention of gods.

The name sticks, and the elder gods soon are named by the newly dubbed godspawn. When another of these gods rears its head, Fort Weyr fully expects another attack. However, the strange tentacled creature isn't hostile, and manages to communicate via godspawn translation that it wants to help, of all things. With no one else to turn to, the help is accepted and Sk'htak is reluctantly accepted as a visitor to the weyr.

Two turns later, Benden falls. With only three vastly separated weyrs remaining, things are tense. Candidates are drying up at a time when dragons and whers are needed more than ever. When Bfahlit takes up residence in the nearby ruins of Fort, an expeditionary force is made to try and determine the nature of the minor god. It proves to be friendly enough, though it's lack of obvious assistance means that pilgrimages to its dangerous home are widely discouraged by the weyrleader and weyrwoman.

Desperate for candidates, Fort becomes the first weyr to allow godspawn to stand. High Reaches and Ista grow more distant. In an attempt to stop looking at the past and start looking towards their future, Fort Weyr changes its name to Midnight Weyr. The old Pern is dead. When gold Stallath lays her last clutch and dies soon after, panic courses through the veins of Midnight Weyr. In an attempt to instill some sort of order, a weyrleader is elected. Gold Radirith's hatching is viewed as a blessing.

However, she clutches late. It's not until turn 2048, at the age of six, she finally rises and lays her first clutch. Midnight Weyr hopes that this new clutch helps them survive.
